Providing Help for Medical Hair Loss

Losing hair can be challenging, but with advancements in technology, it's now possible to look and enhance one's self-image. There are various types of wigs available, including human hair wigs, synthetic wigs, and hair prostheses. If you are in need of any type of wigs, or wellness solutions during your treatment, reach out to Clarke's Concept today.

Human hair wigs are more expensive and require more servicing, while synthetic wigs are less expensive and easier to style. Hair prostheses are designed to fit the individual's needs and are flexible in application. Obtaining a wig or prosthetic hair system before the effects of chemotherapy or radiation therapy become apparent is recommended. Contact us today to learn more about our wellness solutions.

Effects of Radiation and Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy treatment uses various drugs, and hair loss may vary depending on the type and dosage prescribed. Your medical health team can advise you on hair loss expectations based on your treatment. After chemotherapy, hair follicles resume processing amino acids from blood, resulting in new hair.

Radiation therapy uses high-energy rays to stop cancer cells from growing and multiplying. Radiation is a strong treatment for cancer, but it can sometimes affect normal tissue and cells, causing side effects. One possible side effect is hair loss, which may be temporary in the treated area. Most hair will start growing again after treatment.

Thankfully, chemotherapy and radiation treatment only affect the newly formed cells and not the hair follicles themselves. As a result, hair loss is typically temporary. Upon stopping treatment, you can anticipate a restoration to normal hair growth.

Good Hair Care Guidelines:

While undergoing therapy, take better-than-usual care of your hair and scalp. Follow these recommendations for proper hair care with the endorsement of your physician or nurse:

  • Shampoo regularly
  • Comb or brush gently to minimize strain on your hair
  • Avoid high heat, such as in hair dryers and straighteners, in drying or styling your hair
  • Avoid braids, corn-rows or naturals
  • Avoid sleeping with rollers in your hair
  • Consider using a satin pillowcase - this will reduce friction between your hair and the pillowcase
  • Keep your hair and scalp clean with gentle products
  • Stay away from any kind of harsh chemical treatments to your hair – such as coloring or perms
